Rule of ThirdsAt the start of this assignment I was really confused since I've never heard about this rule before, but after some time applying the rule to some pictures I am becoming more comfortable using the rule. At first it is complicated but then it becomes easier to use the rule of thirds, overall I really did learn a lot from this assignment.

Reflection
During this project it was hard to try to capture the photos, using the camera, and figure out the definition of each element. But after a while of taking pictures I started to get used to using the camera and their settings. At first it can be frustrating when the picture doesn't turn out right but the more you use it, the more comfortable you get and it is a lot of fun.

Principals of Design
Reflection
Through the making of this assignment it was a lot easier, since we got to use more before then it is starting to get easier taking the pictures and making them look good. And for most of the words I knew the definition because I worked with these elements before in my old school. The only problem we had at first was the fact that we couldn't get the camera to focus, but I think most of the pictures turned out well. Above all I believe I am starting to learn more about how to use the cameras and the principals too.

Reflection
This assignment was fairly easy, at the start I wasn't sure what to do or how I would do this. But after asking some questions and looking at the tutorials I eventually got the hang of it and was able to do this. One thing I learned from this is that instead of editing and doing everything manual I can just use a filter to help me create these kinds of images. I think I will use this skill for when I want to create a logo or a picture to capture attention.

Reflection
This assignment was the most difficult of them all, but that is mostly because you need to figure out which handle will control what. And since this requires to be more technical, and just using your head without using guidelines it made it much more difficult. It does get easier the more you practice but my advice is to keep watching tutorials and practice with a game. I think for this technique I would use it for when you need to add something that is not in your picture. |
Photography Final
Analysis
Analise: In my picture we can see 4 people, 1 adult and 3 kids, plants, and a building behind it. The way I used the elements of design was creating a focal point with the figure in the middle while also creating contrast. And I used the rule of thirds by putting one of my classmates on the left of the picture.
Interpret: The intent or the message of this idea was that kids are growing up too fast these days and the majority of the parents don't want to let them go because to them they are still children.
Judge: My principals of design do match my intent because the contrast and focal point demonstrate that the adult's previous child is now grown up and moved on. And my rule of thirds demonstrates that the adult is not going with them because they know they have to let them go.

Reflection
This assignment was the most stressing work I had to do, mostly because I couldn't get the commands right and I kept having to retry over and over again. But after calming myself down and following the video step by step I got the hang of it and ended up completing the assignment. One thing I learned is how to add color to certain parts of the picture. Another thing I learned is that no matter how many times you mess up you just have to keep trying, and if you're ever stressed about an assignment take a quick break and come back to it later.

I really loved this assignment and it was because I was able to do it all by myself. The only problem is that it is very time consuming because you have to figure out how you draw the triangles and make sure no realistic detail is shown, and make sure the triangles look nice as well. I am very pleased with my results, my only problem is that when I used the pen tool to trace it some of the parts were cut because the space was too small for the pen tool. Overall I really loved it and I hope I get to do more of this stuff in Photoshop.

Reflection
At the start this assignment was stressing me out because I wasn't able to get the brush to work, but I knew I had to turn it in, so what I ended up doing was going back at the video because there I was one step I missed and that was probably why it wasn't working. Now I know that it's better to play the video from the beginning and only skip to the part I need. I think the only thing that was giving me trouble was the brush in general so making this is not bad it's just that the tools are really frustrating sometimes. This piece of art is definitely something I'd like to try again because even though it was hard to make, it still is a lot of fun.

What I liked about these pictures is that it starts out as a struggle with the technology but then after the struggles it turns out better then what one might expect. The struggles I had was that the tools weren't working, trouble understanding the video, and the timing on these. My biggest concern for these is that I wanted them to look good because it wasn't just an assignment for class but it was also an image of myself. But I did like how they turned out because they don't look messy or done in a rush, they look neat and creative. I do hope that we'll get to do more of these in the future.

Paper Still Life
Radial
Circle
Street Yard
Tunnel
S. Shape
Reflection
The color scheme was warm colors, the jobs I had were stylist, photographer, gaffer, and art director, and the compositions were circle, radial, S shape, tunnel, and street yard. I chose this color scheme because it was pretty simple and I didn't want to look back and forth into the color wheel to see what colors are complementary to each other. The composition I liked the most was the S shaped because it looks the neatest out of all of them. Making these shapes can help me as an artist because with drawing and painting you do use shapes in order to help with the final image. What I liked the most of this assignment was making the shapes because we were able to make any shapes we wanted.

Assignment Mash Up
Reflection
I liked this assignment because I used a skill that I learned in my own time which was adding an object with a layer mask. I also got to use my skills as an artist like using the brush to add the colors and using the smudge tool. What I did was placed my cartoon portrait and tried to make a radial composition using my paper still art photo as the background and smudging the shapes to create a flow. What I learned from this assignment was that sometimes mistakes can be a good thing.

Hot Light Portrait
Critique
Describe: I see a very black background, a girl looking towards the camera, and red lighting on her face.
Analyze: I see that the main focus is on the face because that's where most of the light hits, and the main focal point is in the middle of the image.
Interpret: I think the message was rage because of how dark the image is and usually in most occasions, red is often used as the color of anger.
Judge: I think it was successful because I used the colors right and you can see my face, but I could've been more expressive of the emotion I was trying to make.

Pictures With Drama
Critique
Describe: I see two people that look like they had a conflict and the girl on the left seems to be letting go of what looks like her friend, and I also see hands coming for the person on the right. Analyze: I notice that the focus is more on the person on the right because they're facing the other way instead of forward, and the hands add more emphasis. Interpret: The message from this picture is about being careful of who one chooses because they may look friendly but they can have someone more sinister, more darker in them. It also means that if you do find someone who is like that then it's best to let go, and the hands represent the dark energy coming to the person on the right. Judge: I believe that this was a very successful picture because it captured what I was going for in my mind, but I do wish that I could've done the monster that I was planning to do in the beginning.

Questions
a. What did you like best about your work.
What I liked about my work was that it matched up perfectly with the image that I had in my head.
b. What did you learn?
I learned more about how to work with the hot light.
c. What would you do different?
What I would do differently was try to create the monster that I originally had planned for this picture.
d. What was your process, and what technique did you use that helped really make your image good?
My process was coming up with a message, looking for a place to shoot the picture, finding models, positioning the models, finding a good camera angle, and shoot. The technique that I used was just a lot of trial and error because even though I could've researched more about how to make these kinds of pictures, I learn more by experience.
e. Would you put this image in your portfolio, or a show. WHY?
I would put it in my portfolio or a show because this picture shows a lot of emotion with a deeper message.

Macro Lens
Reflection
Describe: I see a dandelion growing on the floor. It also looks like sticks and grass around it. Analyze: The focus is more on the flower because because behind it looks like its blurry and instead of nature colors like green and brown it is a bright yellow which creates more interest. Interpret: I think what this kind of photo shows is that the most beautiful things are out in nature. Judge: This photo was very successful because you can really see the focus in the flower, and it's using the rule of thirds since it's not in the middle.
Happy Accidents
Critique
Describe: I see a gray person with a different colored hand, almost skin tone, and shadows in the background. Analyze: I noticed that the focus is more on the hand than the statue. Because the hand has a different color than the rest of the image it adds more emphasis. Interpret: The message from this picture is about being consumed by one's own personal problems, thats why the person is wrapped and covered in grey. And the hand represents the person trying to get out of its own chrysalis of dilemmas. Judge: I believe that this was a very successful picture because it captured what I was going for in my mind and I don't think I would want to change anything.
The Model Collection
I call this collection the model collection. I took these pictures during a field trip to the San Diego Community City college. During this trip we needed to take pictures, enhancing our photo taking skills. We got to work a lot with models, even when they were walking down the runway. So I put together some pictures that I found great to put them on display here.
